Backgroud

Society 5.0 epitomizes Japan's initiative to foster societal advancement, marking a departure from the current information technology-centred Society 4.0. This next phase underscores human-cantered strategies driven by scientific and technological advancements, particularly in AI, robotics, biotechnology, and nanotechnology, aimed at addressing global challenges anticipated to confront Japan ahead of other nations. On the other hand, Industry Revolution 5.0, also known as Industry 5.0, symbolizes a European Commission-led effort to cultivate a sustainable, human-centred, and resilient European industry. Industry 5.0 acknowledges the industry's potential to achieve societal objectives beyond mere job creation and economic growth, striving to become a robust contributor to prosperity by shifting the focus from individual technologies to a holistic approach that encompasses our planet's well-being, with the welfare of industry workers placed at the forefront of the production process.

Goal/Rationale

While the concepts of these innovative paradigms may appear lofty and ideal, their practical implementation can pose significant challenges. For instance, such paradigm shifts necessitate a delicate balance between the relationship of technology with society/industry and the technology-mediated interactions between individuals and society/industry. This research endeavour seeks to investigate the extent to which organizations embrace the Society/Industry 5.0 paradigm in their innovation processes and the progression of this implementation.

Scope and Information for Participants

This workshop is aimed at students, researchers, and professionals with an interest in Society 5.0 and Industry 5.0, with a particular focus on those in the final stages of their academic journey. The objective is to provide a comprehensive understanding of these topics through a cross-continental comparative study, incorporating insights from global politics and socio-humanities, and supplemented by fieldwork studies. Highlights

Dr. Rebecca Liu, in collaboration with her colleague Mr. Steve Kramer from Periphas Ltd., conducted a workshop titled "Industry 5.0 and Society 5.0: A Study from the Global Politics and Socio-Humanity Perspective" on January 23, 2025, at Lancaster University. The workshop was attended by 51 participants.

The session began by examining the macro drivers in Europe and Japan that are shaping the evolution towards Industry 5.0 and Society 5.0. Society 5.0, a Japanese initiative, represents a transformative leap from the current information-technology-focused Society 4.0 to a future where societal advancement is the central focus. In contrast, Industry 5.0, spearheaded by the European Commission, emphasizes a sustainable, human-centric, and resilient approach to industrial development.

The workshop provided a comprehensive overview of these concepts, delving into key themes such as human-centric innovation, sustainability, and digitalization from a futurist perspective. It also featured a cross-continental comparative study, exploring the implications of global politics and socio-humanities in driving these transformations.

The session concluded with a discussion on the implications of these developments for the UK, followed by an interactive Q&A session. This allowed participants to engage with the speakers and identify critical areas for practical application and future research.

The workshop received highly positive feedback, with participants describing it as “very inspiring,” “important for thinking forward,” and “an amazing presentation,” among other commendations.

Ways to Participate

To break the barriers of time and space and to provide seamless communication opportunities for worldwide scholars, both online and offline participation methods are supported for the workshop. Participants are encouraged to bring their own insights, experiences, and examples to share with the group through either presenting a poster online or attending in person.

Poster Session

The poster session will provide an opportunity for researchers to present their work in a visual and interactive way, allowing for more engagement and discussion with other attendees. Authors of qualified papers will be invited to present their works with digital posters. We believe that this online poster session will still be a great platform for participants to share, discuss, and cooperate. All accepted authors will receive an invitation email to present at the official workshop website. Please note that all poster presenters must submit the poster before January 13, 2025. Detailed information on your presentation date and time will be confirmed closer to the meeting. If you have any questions, please email [email protected] .
